June 5, 2011 - Seaside Park, NJ - Although the weather forecast called for cloudy skies and afternoon thunderstorms, attendance to the NJWWA's first event held in Seaside was still respectable with over twenty windsurfers. As the NJWWA membership trickled into the 14th Avenue lot, they were welcomed to both the SE 10mph breeze and the waived beach badge fee for participants. The first group of beginners arrived as Tom and Luke finished rigging the teaching equipment. After a brief introduction in wind dynamics, the students made their way through basic land-simulator instruction. After which, the volunteer instructors reinforced this new found knowledge as they accompanied them on the water for some sailing in the shallows just off the beach.
Our novice clinic found a couple of our seasoned veterans mentoring some of our up & coming members, covering sail tuning, harness line placement, pivot jibes, waterstarting, and more. Many of the participants also gave stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) a try throughout the day.
Just after noon, a nice lunch of subs & pizza from Nino's was served. Soon after, with everybody on land, the skippers meeting attracted some additional novice racers with the promise of an easy, laid-back race course. This venue offered the added benefit of having the race committee and accompanying spectators, perched at the end of the pier close to all the racing action and finishline. The pier in effect acted as a large committee boat and grandstand! All Fun Fest racers will be entered into a July 17 Fun Fest drawing to win a 1 year subscription to iWindsurf.
